Interesting Frosted Findings

Recently Falcon UAV was asked to provide NDVI images of crops damaged by frost.
We scanned a very large vineyard and a wheat field.
Interestingly, on visual inspection of the frosted wheat, the heads looked normal however the kernels did not develop inside.
Hence the NDVI map showed where the frost had affected the crop better than simply looking at the wheat.

The flights over the vineyard were conducted within a few days of the frost event.
When ground proofing was conducted some 10 days after, the vines had responded by vigorously growing a new, healthy looking canopy.
Upon checking underneath however, those vines were ‘burnt’ and were frost damaged.
Once again, the NDVI map showed what the human eye could not detect.

Regular scanning for NDVI images will keep ahead of crop health.
